Your dog also needs time to become familiar with its sound and vibration. Introduce the device separately from the grooming task, and ask a groomer or veterinarian to show you appropriate nail-care technique.
Keep each contact brief. The light helps illuminate the area, but it cannot tell you how much nail to remove. Dark nails need particular care because the quick can be difficult to see.

Learn the tool before the first nail.
You want to take care of their nails, and you’re careful about taking off too much. A grinder approaches the task gradually, filing the edge rather than making a single cut.

Product fact
Replaceable diamond wheel
The wheel spins to file the nail's surface rather than cutting it in one motion. It detaches, and spare wheels are available as add-ons.
-
Product fact
Files gradually
Small amounts come off with each pass, so you can reassess as you go.
-
Product fact
Light, not detection

Getting started
Before the first nail
Let your dog get familiar with Aegis Pro switched on, away from their paw, before you bring it near a nail. Sound and vibration are usually the bigger adjustment, not the grinding itself, so give that its own introduction first.
First session
One nail is a complete first session
Your first session does not need to cover every nail. Try one, see how your dog responds to the sound and the light, and stop there if that is enough for the day. You can build up to the rest over several short sessions instead of one long one.
- Introduce the sound before grinding a nail
- One nail is a complete first session
- Pause when your dog moves away
Right tool
Is Aegis Pro the right tool for your dog?
A grinder suits dogs who tolerate a steady buzzing sound and a small amount of vibration against the nail; some dogs adjust quickly, others need more time. If your dog has very dark nails, or you are unsure how they will respond to the sound, ask a groomer or veterinarian before your first attempt at home.
- Files small amounts with each pass
- Dark nails need extra care and a groomer's demonstration
- Neither a grinder nor a clipper makes injury impossible
Your judgment
Judgment, not the light, decides when to stop
The LED lights the nail so you can see what you are doing; it does not identify the quick or tell you where to stop, that call is yours to make, nail by nail. Keep each contact brief, remove small amounts, and if you are ever unsure where the quick sits, especially on dark nails, stop and ask a groomer or veterinarian to show you the technique.
- The LED adds light, it does not find the quick
- Use brief contacts to avoid heat
- Remove only small amounts
